MRI Shielding
The NMS Copper Shield uses high quality pure copper sheet soldered together to form a long lasting RF shield that meets or exceeds all MRI manufacturer shielding specifications. Our use of soldered copper sheet is a highly effective design which eliminates the possibility of loosening bolts or screws - the places where RF leaks can occur in modular RF shield systems. The following paragraphs give potential NMS customers a good idea of how the MRI site should be prepared and how our shield is installed by NMS engineers.
NMS Flooring Process
The floor is an extremely important part of a successful MRI shield enclosure. Our floor uses a self-leveling epoxy resin poured over the existing concrete slab. It is important to remember that although the epoxy is self-leveling, the concrete slab must still meet the minimum MRI manufacturers specifications for levelness, which is usually 1/4 inch for every 10 feet. The epoxy provides a waterproof solid foundation that prevents moisture from reaching the copper shield, and also protects in the event of liquid spills. Our copper sheet is then applied to the epoxy and all seams are soldered to form one continuous, mechanically seamless surface. A high performance floor underlayment is installed as the final layer. Our underlayment is an excellent foundation for the customer to install their finish flooring and carries a manufacturer's 25 year guarantee. The NMS flooring system is less than one inch thick, which is one of the smallest floor shielding profiles in the business, while supplying outstanding shielding effectiveness and a rock solid sub-floor.
NMS Copper Walls and Ceiling
Our unique shielding process uses high quality pure copper overlapped and soldered at the seams. There are no screws, bolts, or other fasteners that can cause gaps or leaks. The ceiling is installed exactly the same as the walls; copper sheets with all seams soldered. Maintaining an air gap from the copper walls, a specialized bracket system is installed on the perimeter of the ceiling by our installers after the copper walls and ceiling are completed. The customer (contractor) can then install the studs and drywall and other wall finishes.
Doors, Windows, and Penetrations
All door, window, and HVAC openings are framed out prior to the start of the shielding installation. NMS manufacturers our own doors, windows, and other shielding components and NMS installers will install them after the walls and ceiling copper installation is finished. The NMS MRI shielded door is the result of many hours of R&D to create a solid door that provides high shielding effectiveness and low maintenance for many years of use. NMS windows use clear-view screen and meet all MRI manufacturers shielding specifications.
Electrical and other Shield Penetrations
All electrical power, HVAC, water sprinkler, medical gases, and other penetrations into the MRI room must pass through an NMS waveguide. Electrical power filters are mounted outside the room by NMS and wired to the breaker panel by the electrician contractor. Our power filter then penetrates the shield and the electrical contractor will attach his wiring on the inside of the room to route to the lights or electrical outlets. Each circuit requires a separate filter. Normally one for lights, one for electrical outlets, and one additional for low voltage applications, however some MRI installations may require as many as 5 power filters or more. Additional information can be provided describing each type of penetration and its connection.
National MRI Shielding has taken the time to research and test all different styles and methods of RF shielding and we believe we have the very best solution that provides an extremely high degree of shielding effectiveness. Our product lasts for many years with very low maintenance needed after the installation is complete. That combined with a fast efficient installation process and very competitive pricing means that the NMS Shield is the very best in the business.
